Recommended: Lady and the Tramp (1955) Animated Film
Our first recommendation is Walt Disney’s 15th animated film, Lady and the Tramp.
We have a very classic story of a wealthy lady and a man of the streets. The main couple get off to a rocky start as many do. Tramp swaggers his way into Lady’s life and frightens her about the coming changes. He doesn’t quite show much of a charming side and instead gives her what he feels is the honest truth.
Writers love to do this to show a development in the couple’s relationship. However, then they need an opportunity for the leading lady to trust the hero. Especially in a short amount of time. Many writers do this by having the hero save the lady from something. In Titanic, Jack convinces Rose not to jump, then pulls her up when she slips. In Beauty and the Beast, Beast rescues Belle from the wolves. In this movie, we have a scene where Lady is running for her life from violent dogs. Tramp catches this disaster and jumps in front of Lady to fight off the dogs. Such a great scene to portray Tramp in a great light. It also starts the trust process on Lady’s part. Especially since Tramp is such a player.
While this story has more mature themes later on with the implication that Tramp gets Lady pregnant, this movie has a perfect love story of these two from different worlds. Tramp gets to prove himself again in a scene of protecting the baby from a rat that gets into the house near the end of the movie.
There’s no true villain in this story, but we do get several antagonists. The violent dogs chasing Lady with the speculation they would assault her. The rat with the intention to harm the baby. The dog catcher and the whole of the pound’s procedures with stray dogs. The two siamés cats that come with their own problematic characterization. (Please remember, this movie is a product of its time.) Aunt Sarah may be considered the true antagonist, but she doesn’t have that powerful presence and comes off as more of a nuisance. Thus there isn’t really any spicy interactions with the villains that our heroes have to face.
However, as a love story with a fantastic scene of the man fighting off evil to protect the woman, this movie will scratch that itch for you. Bonus that it’s a great family film.
